Moranes, face painted in white - Tarangire - Tanzania

At 14, the young Masai participates in a ceremony during which he is circumcised and becomes Morane. In the days leading up to circumcision, he is dressed in black from head to toe and his face is painted white. That's when he leaves his tribe with other boys his age.
Young boys go out to the bush to graze cattle. They learn to dominate their fear of wild beasts and must be able to protect their flock. Linked to life at death with his companions, he acquires the right to carry a spear and a shield and hunt to survive. On his return, another ceremony consecrated him full-fledged man. He becomes an elder and joins his village to get married.
